This position will have responsibility of managing the complex care of adults with both solid tumors as well as benign and malignant hematologic disorders
The nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA) will have the following clinical responsibilities after orientation and competency to provide independent care with oversight from a supervising MD.
The NP/PA will have 8 half day clinics per week primarily in the Cool Springs Hematology Oncology clinic and will be paired to work with the MD on call that week. The primary location will be in the Cool Springs Clinic, but the NP/PA might also have to work in the other off-site clinics, on occasion, depending on staffing gaps.
The NP/PA will provide care for patients with benign hematological disorders (e.g. bleeding and clotting disorders, iron deficiency anemia, and other blood count abnormalities)
The NP/PA will provide care for patients with hematological malignancies and solid tumors who are receiving chemotherapy, and will be expected to manage complications of the disease and treatment.
The NP/PA will have their own independent practice, but will also be expected to see acute visits of patients of other providers if needed.
The position is primarily an outpatient practice which will entail working Monday through Friday with no expectation to work on weekends. However, as the off-site practice evolves, there is a possibility of needing coverage in the future for both inpatients and during weekends.
The hematological services will include coordinating transfusion and chelation therapy, coordinating phlebotomy for patients with polycythemia, coordinating care with anticoagulation clinic, coordinating peri-procedure and peri-operative anticoagulation management, coordinating care with other health care providers within or outside of Vanderbilt Health Systems.
The hematological malignancy and solid tumor oncology services will include routine follow up visits, subsequent chemotherapy encounters and visits for acute symptom management.
The NP/PA will work independently (after competency is established) but will have oversight from a collaborating physician as per medical center policies
The NP/PA will utilize leadership and analytical skills to coordinate and optimize health care team interventions across the continuum and to develop and meet outcomes management and system improvement goals.

Coordinates care of patients across continuum in collaboration with triad and health care team
provides leadership in the development of processes/systems; planning/managing/evaluating care-continuum of care planning
provides coordination of patient care, working with case-managers, consistent with Advanced Practice, VUMC, accrediting and regulatory standards
provides leadership in assuring that resources are optimally used to facilitate patient care goals and appropriate cost and LOS
provides leadership in area of preventive care; educating and stressing the importance of preventive health care to patients and families.
provides leadership in the area of pain management- emphasizing home pain action plan; developing individualized pain order sets; educating patient and families about adverse effects of opiates and opiate weaning; supportive role for the inpatient team and emergency department; education of other Advanced Practice Providers (APP) and emergency department staff
provides support for hospitalized patients in a consultative role; ensuring timely clinic follow-up for discharged patients; advice and education for other inpatient MLP on patient care pathways
provides leadership in area of best transfusion practices; maintain database for simple transfusion and apheresis procedures; catheter management and coordination with blood bank.
acts as a liaison between the patient, primary care provider, and specialists.
Participates in clinical research activities after appropriate training that will include Vanderbilt IRB Boot Camp.
enrolls participants in clinical studies, and coordinate care with the research team.
