The Heart Chief will provide leadership in the development, strategic direction and operations for new Heart Center at South Texas Veterans Health Care System. This will involve combining Cardiology Services and Cardio-Thoracic (CT) Surgery into one center. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be available for a highly qualified candidate. The ideal applicant will be either a Cardiologist with subspecialty training or a CT Surgeon. The Heart Chief will develop strong relationships with the existing clinical services of Cardiology and CT surgery collaborating to achieve the goal of one combined service, implementation of new programs and assess/improve quality outcomes. Partnerships will also include the Chief of Surgery, Chief of Medicine, members healthcare affiliate and San Antonio Military Medical Center. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing and maintaining Heart Center programs inclusive of professional peer review, organizational improvement, continuing education, scope of practice, clinical privileging, and other quality and process improvement activities. Incumbent's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, enhancing educational and research programs in the STVHCS. Commitment to excellence in patient care and an interest in teaching are essential. The Heart Chief will be expected to participate in a variety of leadership and administrative duties. These will include distribution of clinical and educational duties among the staff, support of administrative functions of the service and to mentor colleagues. The Heart Chief is expected to actively participate in quality improvement activities and ensure compliance with rules and regulations of the agency, facility and department. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 49-54 days paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days' sick leave, 10 federal holidays). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years' vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory. CME: Possible $1,000 per year stipend + possible 1 week paid authorized absence to attend. Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided. Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
